The 13-Tag Strategy

What Each of Your 13 Etsy Tags Should Be Covering

Every tag should cover a different buyer search angle. Most under-performing listings repeat the same 2–3 angles across all 13 slots — leaving the rest uncovered.

The comparison tool identifies which of these angles your competitors cover that yours doesn't — giving you a specific list of replacement tags, not generic advice about tag strategy.

Common Tag Mistakes

4 Tag Mistakes That Waste Your 13 Slots

These patterns appear in the majority of underperforming Etsy listings. Each wastes valuable search coverage.

01

Tags that duplicate words already in your title

Etsy automatically indexes every word in your title — you don't need to repeat them in your tags. A tag like "ceramic mug" when your title contains "ceramic coffee mug" wastes a slot that could cover a completely different search angle buyers use.

→ Fix: Replace duplicated title words with unique angles not covered anywhere in your listing
02

Single-word tags that compete against millions of listings

Tags like "mug," "gift," or "ceramic" are searched by millions of buyers — but competed for by millions of sellers. Multi-word tags like "ceramic mug for coffee lover" are searched by buyers who are ready to buy, not browse, and have far less competition for placement.

→ Fix: Replace single-word tags with 2–4 word buyer-intent phrases
03

Using 5 of 13 slots — leaving 8 completely empty

Empty tag slots are ranking opportunities you've handed to competitors. Etsy gives you 13 opportunities to appear in different search results. Every empty slot is a search query where a competitor with 13 tags might appear and you won't.

→ Fix: Fill all 13 slots — use the full allowance Etsy provides
04

All 13 tags cover the same type of angle

Thirteen variations of "handmade ceramic mug" cover only one search angle repeatedly. Buyers search for mugs from many different starting points — gift occasions, style aesthetics, recipient types, and use cases. A listing that only covers one starting point misses the rest.

→ Fix: Map each tag to a different buyer context, occasion, style, recipient, or use case
FAQ

Questions About Etsy Tag Gaps and Competitor Coverage

How do I see what tags my Etsy competitors are using?
Go to the competitor's listing page on Etsy. Scroll down to the "Item details" section — all 13 tags are visible there. Copy each tag into the comparison tool. Alternatively, the tag section is also visible in the Etsy listing URL when you navigate to the full listing view. The comparison tool accepts tags as a comma-separated list or one per line.
If my competitor uses a tag and I copy it, will I rank the same as them?
Adding a tag that a higher-ranking competitor uses makes your listing eligible for that search — it doesn't automatically rank you equally. Ranking also depends on your listing's engagement history (click-through rate and conversion), review velocity, and title relevance for that tag's keyword. But you can't rank for searches you're not eligible for — and missing tags guarantee you won't appear for those searches at all.
How many of my tags should be different from my competitors?
You should cover the high-impact angles your competitors already rank for (material, style, recipient, occasion) — while also adding angles they don't cover. A listing that matches all their tags competes for the same searches. A listing that covers those angles plus additional unique ones appears in more searches. The comparison tool identifies both — what to adopt from competitors and what additional coverage you could add that neither of you currently has.
